Step-by-Step for How to Layer a Hair Cut

    • 1). Divide your hair into two sections using a comb and hair clips. Leave a layer of hair down at the nape of your neck, and clip the rest of the hair up. Create a horizontal part across the head to ensure an even layer.

    • 2). Use hair cutting scissors to trim the ends of the hair. Cut straight across, then pick up smaller sections and cut into the ends using small snips. Point the scissors toward the head and snip. This gives the edge a softer appearance.

    • 3). Bring down another layer of hair. Trim a straight line across this layer, making this layer slightly shorter than the layer underneath. Hold sections of hair up, hold the scissors toward the head and use fast snips to soften hair edges.

    • 4). Take down the next layer of hair. Each layer will be up to one inch thick. Cut this layer slightly shorter than the layer underneath. Continue pulling down sections of hair and creating layers. The longer the hair, the longer the layers should be. Shorter hair can get away with shorter layers, especially around the face.

    • 5). Cut layers around the face by starting at the chin and working your way up to create bangs. The bangs can be swept across the forehead or parted in the middle and framed around the face. Create no more than three to four layers around the face. Pull up sections of hair at each side and cut one layer at a time. Remember to soften the hair edges.

    • 6). Study the haircut for areas that need more trimming or areas that need to be evened up. Comb the hair to see how the hair is going to fall. Flare the ends out, curl them under or put curls in the layered hair for style.
