- The elastic inside a garter will ensure that it stays in place during the ceremony, photos and reception. Without the elastic, you could spend too much time at your wedding pulling and tugging at your garter. The elastic will not fall, no matter how much you dance, pose for pictures or mingle with guests. The elastic, which can be as wide as you want, will be hidden inside your ribbon to keep it out of view.
- The ribbon is the most essential part of the garter. It hides the elastic from view and offers a pop of color. Make a tube to hold the elastic by folding a piece of ribbon in half and sewing the edges together. The ribbon must be at least double the width of your elastic or the elastic will fit inside the ribbon. Satin ribbon is very common for garters because of the shiny finish, but you can use any style of ribbon to match your wedding theme or dress.
- For a fun and frilly garter, use lace. Be careful when selecting lace -- look for lace that is not too rough on the skin. The last thing you need is the distraction of lace scratching you during the ceremony and reception! The lace can be sewn to the outside edges of the garter. If you are not handy with a needle and thread, turn the garter wrong side out and add small drops of fabric glue all the way around the garter. Gently press the lace to the glue. Allow the glue to dry before wearing.
- To add a bit of style to a wedding garter, consider adding embellishments. Pearls and beading can be sewn onto the garter, or select jewels in your wedding colors. If you do not have your something blue, select blue beads or jewels to sew to the garter. You can even glue or sew beads on the garter to create the first letter of your new last name.
The beads and pearls can be added to stretchy thread -- ideal because it is less likely to snap as you move throughout the ceremony and reception -- and then stitched onto the front of the garter. Select a color of stretchy thread that matches the garter.
