- 1). Run a block eraser utility if the defect in your hard drive allows. A block eraser overwrites each block on your hard drive repeatedly and completely. You can use a freeware program such as DBAN to do this.
- 2). Encrypt files before you delete them, if your hard drive allows. Even if a data recovery tool is able to find these deleted files, it won't be able to un-encrypt them to read them.
- 3). Remove the hard drive from the computer and take off the casing using a screw driver. Then, smash the hard drive with the sledge hammer. This will physically destroy the hard disk, making it unreadable by any means.
