How to Clean a DE Type Pool Filter

    Monthly Cleaning

    • 1). Turn off the pool pump.

    • 2). Move the lever on the filter unit to "backwash" and turn on the pump.

    • 3). Monitor the waste water. When the water becomes clear, turn off the pump.

    • 4). Move the bump handle to dislodge DE and particles in the filtration unit. Turn on the pump and monitor the waste water. Turn the pump off when the water becomes clear.

    • 5). Move the lever on the filter unit to "rinse" and turn on the pump. Turn off the pump when the waste water is clear.

    • 6). Move the lever on the filter unit to "filter" and turn on the pump.

    • 7). Add the recommended amount of DE to the skimmer basket in small amounts to prevent clogging the pipe from the skimmer basket to the filter.

    • 8). Remember the pressure reading of the filter tank after cleaning. When the pressure of the tank reaches 20 PSI higher than this number, clean the unit.

    Complete Cleaning

    • 1). Follow Steps 1 through 5 from the first section for monthly cleaning.

    • 2). Open the pressure release valve on the tank. This is usually located on the pressure gauge assembly. Do not proceed until the pressure has been completely released from the tank.

    • 3). Remove the drain plug located at the bottom of the tank to drain all of the water out of the tank.

    • 4). Unscrew the screws located on the band that secures the lid to the tank and remove the lid.

    • 5). Remove the nut that holds the filter fingers in position and lift the assembly out of the tank.

    • 6). Clean the filter fingers with a jet stream from a garden hose. Remove all of the DE from the filter fingers and top of the assembly. Rinse the entire tank to remove all of the DE from inside the tank.

    • 7). Replace the filter finger assembly in the tank and secure with the nut.

    • 8). Replace the drain plug.

    • 9). Fill the tank with water when cleaning during the season. Do not refill the tank or proceed further if the filter is being cleaned before closing the pool.

    • 10

Replace the gasket and lid and reattach the lid by tightening the band assembly securely.

    • 11

Follow Steps 6 through 8 from the first section for monthly cleaning.
