- 1). Tie a slip knot onto a double-pointed needle.
- 2). Cast on two stitches by looping the yarn around your thumb and putting the needle next to your slip knot stitch twice. Including the slip knot, you will now have three stitches on your needle, which will be your left needle.
- 3). Place the other double-pointed needle through the bottom side of the first stitch, then wrap the yarn around counterclockwise around the same needle. Pull the wrapped loop through the stitch that's on the left needle, then drop the left stitch onto the right needle. This is called the knit stitch. Repeat the process until all the stitches are on the right needle.
- 4). Knit all three stitches again, then pull the trailing yarn from the last stitch over to knit the first stitch. This closes the gap and creates the beginning of a tube, or I-cord.
- 5). Continue the knit stitch until the I-cord is long enough for your head. Use a measuring tape to check the length. Headbands are typically 15 to 16 inches for adults and 13 inches for children.
- 6). Knit two stitches to begin binding off. Take the first stitch, and pull it over the second and off the needle. Repeat so you have only one stitch on your needle.
- 7). Pull the last stitch loose, then cut the yarn. Leave a long tail to later tie onto the hairband.
- 8). Use a tapestry needle to pull the cut end through the big loop so it ties onto one side of the hairband. You will now have one I-cord attached to your hairband.
- 9). Repeat Steps 1 through 8 to create two additional I-cords, completing a triple-knitted headband.
