- 1). Find out what type of filtration system your pool uses. An electronic or electro-mechanical timer typically regulates the pump. These may be constant-duty timers or seasonally-adjusted timers.
- 2). Review the instructions for your filter system. Sand filters work differently than diatomaceous earth (DE) filters. The settings should look similar, but the maintenance may be different. For some filters, you may need to prime the filter before you start the timer.
- 3). Set the timer to run for 6 to 8 hours each day. You don't want to use the filter while you swim, so you should enter the time for evening hours. The settings vary based on the type of filtration system you use.
- 4). Turn the filter switch to the "filter" position, which should automatically engage the filter's timer.
- 5). Adjust constant-duty timers manually to optimize energy use. A constant-duty timer starts and stops the filter cycle at the same time of day, regardless of pool usage or the season. This means your pool gets cleaned whether it needs it or not, unless you change your settings. You may want to mark your calendar to remind you to switch the settings with the seasons or during periods when the pool goes unused.
- 6). Use seasonally-adjusted timers to program your swimming pool maintenance on a year-round basis. This type of system allows you to decrease the time the filter operates during cooler months. You can also set the timer to gradually adjust over a period of time to ensure the swimming pool continues to be in prime condition regardless of the weather.
