- Density meters are digital devices that measure the density of different objects. Various scientific industries such as the oil industry, chemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, and beverage industry (in regard to laboratory testing) use this device to measure the density of liquids. For instance, in beverage-industry laboratories, the density of alcohol is tested in order to determine alcohol concentration.
- Oceanographers determine the density of the ocean in order to study currents. During the winter, cold water at the surface sinks to a depth of the same density in deeper water. Currents are formed within the ocean dependent upon the distribution of water pressure. Water pressure depends on variations of density in the water columns of the ocean. In order to determine current patterns, oceanographers need to determine the distribution of density in the ocean.
- The growth of populations is affected by population density since populations of living organisms are constantly changing. Population density affects population growth rate by determining the likeliness that a given organism will interact with a similar species or a different species. In order to determine this likelihood, there are mathematical equations using logarithms and exponents to predict current and future population growths.
- Cell density expresses the number of cells per unit volume. It is often used in various scientific fields for research or for determining how many living cells are present in a given locus. Scientists measure cell density in the fields of hematology, microbiology, bone cell density, cancer research, reproductive biology, neurobiology and radiation therapy.
