Let's face it, the marble tiles on your floor are not what they used to be. You've tried everyone's marble cleaning advice and some helped a little. If you're lucky, the floors aren't damaged after all your experimenting--but they've lost their stunning mirror-like appearance. At this point, after the last time you had them refinished by a professional, you don't even remember what daily maintenance advice they gave you, or if they did at all. Perhaps you're wondering if hiring a professional again is even worth it if months later your floor will just lose it's luster? Before you start over again with your marble floors, have a preventive, daily cleaning game plan in place.
The Marble Floor Game Plan For Daily Cleaning
Daily Marble Cleaning Tip #1:
Clean your marble floors once a week! How?
1) First, remove the "invisible" grit that gets tracked on your marble floor everyday (it acts like sandpaper on your floors) by using a dust mop or vacuum with soft bristle attachment (note: do NOT run an upright vacuum over your marble floors, this will scratch the beautiful, shiny, surface). Always remember to remove the grit first before you "wet clean" your polished marble tile.
2) Second, wet clean your marble with a "neutral" cleaner containing a ph of 7-8.5.
3) An effective third step in daily cleaning is conditioning your marble floor, but if you use a neutral cleaner for marble tiles that conditions as it cleans, you save yourself an added step and arrive faster at a lustrous marble floor. Also, with an easy-to-use marble tile cleaner there is no rinsing necessary. A safe, effective and efficient product for both polished and unpolished marble makes daily cleaning very easy.
If you dread the thought of cleaning once a week, just remember: marble tiles are a gorgeous investment and need special care. Think about the reward of long life from your marble tiles and impressive, mirror-like reflection throughout the floors of your home.
Daily Marble Cleaning Tip #2:
Avoid these suggested remedies at all costs.
Each of these will stain and etch (burn through the finish of) your marble tiles:
- Products Containing Wax (like Mop-N-Glo, it causes build up and must be stripped off)
- Vinegar
- Scented Products (especially leaves streaks)
- Bleach
Harsh liquids are not suitable for your soft, natural stone floors. We ask customers if they would soak their precious pearls in any of these substances. Never forget that your marble floors are natural, from the earth, and contain calcium carbonate which can easily have a chemical reaction with something of a strong PH.
Daily Marble Cleaning Tip #3
Cover your bases--remove the spots on your marble tiles. Sometimes a little accident can happen in a concentrated area like a spill or pet stain gone unnoticed overnight. Liquid stains left overnight will easily etch marble. It's convenient to get a marble tile spot removal kit that has easy-to-follow instructions with all the cleaning tools and products you need to bring that area back to life.
