How to Prevent Moths in Closets

    • 1). Remove all clothing and accessories from your closet and wipe the shelves and walls down using an all-purpose cleaner. Clean your closet once each season to ensure there are no places for moths to lay eggs.

    • 2). Vacuum the carpeting in your closet weekly. A dirty, dusty carpet provides a place for moths to lay eggs.

Change the light bulb in your closet whenever it goes out. Clothes moths prefer darkness, and a brightly lit closet will deter them from nesting.

    • 4). Launder all clothing prior to placing it in your closet. Washable clothing should be washed and dried according to directions, and dry cleanable clothing can be taken to the dry cleaners or laundered with an at-home dry cleaning kit. Dirty, food-stained clothing attracts clothing moths into your closet.

    • 5). Store seasonal clothing in airtight bins. This prevents moths from nesting between layers of clothing. Place seldom-worn, animal-based fabric garments, such as silk, cotton, leather and garments with feathers in airtight containers, as clothes moths are particularly attracted to these fabrics.
