- The Sable, Mercury's best-selling vehicle according to MSN Autos, made its debut in 1986. A mid-size sedan, the Sable fills in between the compact Cougar and the full-sized Grand Marquis. It is constructed on the same platform as Ford's Taurus. Three trims were available in 2003; the GS, GS Plus and the LS Premium. The manufacturer's suggested retail price ranged from $20,625 to $23,025 depending on the trim purchased.
- The GS and GS Plus used a 3.0-liter V6 engine with an overhead cam. The engine had two valves per cylinder for a total of 12 valves. It generated 155 horsepower at 4,900 rpm and 186 ft-lbs. of torque at 3,900 rpm. The bore on this engine was 3.50 inches, while the stroke was 3.10 inches, along with a compression ratio of 9.7:1. It came with a four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. This engine got 20 miles per gallon in the city and 28 miles per gallon on the highway.
- The LS Premium engine was also a 3.0-liter V6. However, this engine had a dual overhead cam with four valves per cylinder for a total of 24 valves. The engine generated 200 horsepower at 5,650 rpm and 200 ft-lbs. of torque at 4,400 rpm. The bore was 3.50 inches while the stroke was 3.13 inches. The compression ratio on this engine was 10:1. It came with a four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. This engine got 20 miles per gallon in the city and 27 miles per gallon on the highway.
- The 2003 Mercury Sable had four doors and stood 55.50 inches tall. It was 199.80 inches long with a 108.50 inch wheelbase. The Sable was 73 inches wide and had a 61.60 inch front track as well as a 62.10 inch rear track.
