- Tanning professionals recommend tanning three to four times a week to build up a tan. After the desired level is achieved, the tan can be maintained with visits two or three times a week. A 48-hour waiting period is suggested between tanning sessions in order to minimize the risk of developing sunburn.
- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration stresses that there is no such thing as a healthy tan. Tanning damages the skin and can lead to a number of short- and long-term side effects including sunburn, premature aging and skin cancer. The FDA warns to "tan no more than once a week" and suggests that it is possible to maintain a tan with sessions only every two to three weeks.
- Tanning is never safe. While commercial tanning salons recommend multiple sessions per week, the FDA warns against tanning more than once per week. You should consult your healthcare provider about the risks involved in tanning and evaluate the appropriate frequency.
