- 1). Climb up to the roof level on a ladder.
- 2). Brush or rake off any snow or ice on top of the shingles with a broom or roof rake. Use an extending roof rake to reach higher portions of the roof.
- 3). Fill a sock or one leg cut off of a pair of pantyhose with magnesium chloride. Magnesium chloride is less corrosive than other deicers, gentler on the environment and melts ice at temperatures well below zero degrees Fahrenheit.
- 4). Place the sock or pantyhose leg on top of the shingles and allow it to sit overnight. Also place a sock or pantyhose filled with the deicer over any other ice blockages. Since an ice block creates a dam, it can prevent the ice melting from underneath the roof shingles from flowing into the gutters and off the roof.
- 5). Remove the sock or pantyhose from the roof the next day. The ice should completely melt overnight.
