Koi fish are popular for fish lovers all around the world.
They are known too for their long life and variety of colors.
When you see them gracefully swimming in the water, you will know why they are admired by a lot of people.
They can survive almost all type of climates except on colder regions.
They can be kept in tanks or better in ponds.
They are also known as Japanese carp and if you are looking for the best breeders, then you will have to go to the same country where they were first developed- that is in Japan.
However, just like any fish variety, they have special needs, especially because they tend to be more suitable in natural ponds.
Here are tips which can guide a novice as well as an expert in the basic requirements of koi fishes.
a.
The pond- the Koi pond needs to be maintained well to avoid diseases on the pets.
The pond must be a meter deep and even deeper in colder areas.
In some cases, owner put net over the ponds to keep dirt away from the waters like dead leaves and the like.
It must also be equipped with the right filter system to keep the water clean and free from bacteria.
Keep in mind too that the location of your pond contributes a lot to the success of koi fish care.
It must be a place where predators such as raccoons, kingfishers and cats cannot easily scoop out the helpless fishes in the pond.
Water temperature on the other hand should be conditioned according to the seasonal changes.
Ph level must be between 7-7.
5 and at least 20 percent of the water must be changed at least once a week.
b.
What to Feed them- above all, the owner of Koi fishes must know and familiarize the food preferences of the fishes they are keeping in the pond.
Koi fishes are great eaters that is why one has to give them food in small quantities only but do it often.
Make sure that you do not overfeed them too for it might also affect their health.
Pellets and sticks are readily available in pet stores so you won't have to worry on where to buy them.
Younger Koi fishes need more protein than older ones so one must consider this fact.
Throw the pellets in the pond in such a way that there will be lesser left-overs for these may sink on the water and rot causing bacteria to form in it.
c.
Koi fish quantity- do not overcrowd your pond.
One of the most important things to consider in keeping the pond is that it must not be full with fishes.
The main reason why Koi love wider area is that they love freedom in their swimming world.
Besides, you will not be able to enjoy the sight of such a crowding pond.
The quantity of the tank of course also depends upon the area of the pond.
Usually, an adult Koi needs 100 gallons of water.
