- 1). Power down the laptop and remove all external devices that are connected to the computer. External devices include cables, modems, USB drives, external hard drives and the like.
- 2). Turn the laptop over and remove the battery. Touch an unpainted metal surface or wear a wrist grounding strap before moving on. Doing either will prevent you from introducing static into the internal components of the laptop.
- 3). Turn the laptop over and open it. Insert the end of a small plastic wedge or a flat-head screwdriver under the right side of the keyboard bezel (the plastic strip above the keyboard) and lift it gently. Pull the bezel off with your hand. This exposes the screws that secure the keyboard to the laptop.
- 4). Remove the screws and flip the keyboard over the palm rest and mouse pad. Be careful when moving the keyboard around, because it's still attached to the laptop by a flat cable that connects directly to the motherboard.
- 5). Disconnect the flat cable and the keyboard should be free.
- 6). Remove the screw that holds the old CD-ROM in place and pull the drive out of the laptop. Transfer the brackets on the old CD-ROM to the new one and insert the new CD-ROM into the laptop.
- 7). Replace the screw to secure the CD-ROM in place and then follow the disassembly directions backward to assemble the laptop. Once you've put the laptop back together and connected the battery and all the external devices, start up the computer.
- 8). Insert a disc into the CD-ROM and allow it to play to ensure that it has been installed correctly.
