- Students must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. The Office of Licensing and Regulatory Services mandates a 50-hour training course for personal support specialists. Components of the course include how to bath, dress and move patients from one area to another. How to assist in the bathroom is another segment. Training on diseases and the aging process must also be included.
- The Maine State Labor Task Force designed an entry-level position in the assisted care career ladder. The PSS training is a combination of PCA coursework and the instruction received by a residential care assistant (RCA). Students who complete this training are eligible to apply for positions in residential care facilities.
- The Maine Personal Assistant Services Association is a non-profit organization that provides networking opportunities for individuals in this profession. The association also arranges conferences and other events to promote further education and development.
