Cats are very affectionate pets and become great friends with their owners.
That is the reason you would find that cat owners tend to have more than one cat in their household.
But one has to be aware that the temperament of the cat varies just like human beings.
In addition, they are not very social with other cats and are clearly possessive of their territory.
Hence, you need to be very patient and plan in advance if you are going to bring a new cat to your home when you already have one who is so used to you.
Note that kittens take approximately 12 days to improve the acceptance levels of a new companion.
But older cats may take as long as 12 weeks! Here are few tips to keep in mind when introducing a new cat: • Choose a cat that is younger than your existing pet.
• If you do not want kittens in the house, avoid getting a new feline of the opposite gender.
Otherwise, opt to neuter one of the cats that you have.
• Make sure that the new feline is free from diseases as it may transfer them to your pet.
Steps to introduce: • Isolate the new cat for a few days in such a way that the existing pet does not have eye contact with the new pet.
You can keep the new cat in a different room.
• Allow the cat to settle down comfortably in its new surroundings.
• Make sure that your old cat is not devoid of the attention he used to get after you introduce the new one.
