- 1). Turn off the breaker inside the main electrical breaker panel that supplies electricity to the baseboard heater.
- 2). Mark the location for the wall thermostat. Place the template supplied with the single-gang remodel switch box on the wall at this location. Trace around the template. Cut along the trace line with a drywall saw to remove the wall board at the wall thermostat location.
- 3). Pull a length of 10/2 NM electrical cable from the main electrical breaker panel box to the baseboard wall thermostat location with a fish tape. Pull another length of 10/2 NM electrical cable from the baseboard heater to the thermostat location.
- 4). Insert the electrical cables through the knockouts located in the back of the remodel switch box. Push the box into the wall. Clamp it to the wall by twisting the two screws on the box clockwise.
- 5). Strip the exterior sheathing from the 10/2 NM cables with the wire stripper to expose the black, white and bare copper ground wires inside. Remove 3/4 inch of insulation from the ends of the black and white wires at the wall thermostat location, using the wire stripper. Wrap black electrical tape around the white wires to designate them as hot wires.
- 6). Pair a red wire from the thermostat with the black wire coming from the electrical panel. Twist a red wire connector onto the paired ends of the wires. Pair the remaining red wire from the thermostat with the white wire wrapped in black electrical tape. Twist a red wire connector onto the ends of the wires.
- 7). Connect the black wire from the baseboard heater to the black wire from the wall thermostat, securing them with a red wire connector. Connect the remaining black wire from the thermostat to the white wire wrapped in black electrical tape from the baseboard with another red wire connector.
- 8). Twist a final red wire connector onto the two bare copper ground wires inside the switch box.
- 9). Push the wires and the wall thermostat inside the remodel switch box. Connect the thermostat to the box with the screws provided with the thermostat. Snap the cover over the thermostat.
