- 1). Move your electric clothes dryer near the installation area of your home. If your home is not already equipped with one, install the dryer vent kit according to the manufacturer's instructions. Locate the power connection cover on the backside of the dryer.
- 2). Unscrew the bolts or screws holding the small cover plate on the dryer, using the appropriate screwdriver or ratchet socket. If the dryer receptacle is the four-prong variety, remove the metal strap connected from the frame of the dryer to the middle terminal while making sure you do not disconnect the white neutral wire from the terminal connection.
- 3). Retrieve your new electrical cord and loosen the cord clamp screws on the back of the dryer, near the terminal connections. Route the electrical cord through the hole on the dryer. You may have to bend the individual wires slightly to fish them to the terminal locations.
- 4). Connect the black, white and red wires of a 3-wire dryer cord to the corresponding terminals on the dryer. The black, white and red wires of a 4-wire dryer cord install the same, except the extra green wire attaches to the frame in place of the metal bonding strap. Double-check the wiring connections for tightness and make sure the wire terminal connections are not touching each other.
- 5). Install the cover plate and connect the dryer vent hose to the dryer, using the clamps supplied with the vent kit. Plug the dryer's power cord into the wall receptacle and test for proper operation.
