Right from the way the cabin crew conducts itself to the range of cuisine and entertainment options available inflight (they are definitely worth it if you get to savour Indian dishes and Bollywood hits), these are the things that mark the onset of your journey.
Travelling itself is exasperating at times, and when you have a baby as your companion, the anticipation of a flight itself seems nightmarish. From ensuring your little one has his meals right in flight to making sure no virus comes his way, your baby keeps you on your toes throughout the travel.
But the experience is not that unpleasant as it is made out to be. Just think how amazing would be your travel spent soothing, feeding and cuddling your baby. Plus, you won't have to worry much as the baby is not able to toddle on his own.
Before you take a flight with your baby, here are a few points you must go through to ensure your angel's safety and your peace of mind:
1. Check with the airline: Normally, airlines require infants to be at least 7 days old to take a flight. But some airlines have this bar raised to 14 days, along with some additional precautions. Make sure to check all these requirements with the airlines before you book one. Also, infants (under 2 years of age, or €lap kids' as they are referred to) are entitled to free travel. Children under age 2 sometimes receive a special discount when you purchase a seat for them, particularly when traveling internationally.
2. Check the facilities available: Make sure the airline has all the facilities stacked up to support an infant because it is very important to keep the baby comfortable on long flights. Some of them like a car seat or collapsible strollers are welcome. Check with some of the airlines before making a booking, and settle for the one that best serves the needs of you and your little angel.
3. In flight food: Remember, quite often food served in flight can lead to an upset stomach as babies are very sensitive to external food items. So keep home-cooked food handy. Also, check out the menu of the airline you opt. I flew with Lufthansa and found their food amazing. Not only was the preparation superb, their range of Indian cuisine helped me feed my baby, although a tiny morsel, Indian daal, something she's started to develop a taste for. Watching her sucking my thumb to get a taste of what her mother was having, that too in flight, was an experience I'll never forget.
4. Cabin Crew: A flight's cabin crew goes a long way in making your journey worthwhile, more so when you are travelling with your baby. Courtesy their new €More Indian than You Think' campaign, I found the Lufthansa airline crew amazingly helpful and pleasing. Not only were they considerate of my needs as I was holding a baby, they kept checking on whether I and my toddler were at rest throughout the flight. Carrying forward their legacy of in-flight hospitality, they even offered me a pack of assorted sweets while de-boarding.
5. In-flight entertainment: While most of your time goes attending to your baby's needs, a good in-flight entertainment option lets you unwind through your flight and gives you the option to catch on with your favourite serials while your angel sleeps peacefully by your side. A fan of Mahabharata and Ramayana because I render these mythical stories to my daughter, I was pleased to find both these serials on an in-flight itinerary recently.
So pack your bags and get set for the amazing journey with the most beautiful companion you can ever have. And believe me, the memories you'll make travelling with your bundle of joy would be ones to cherish forever.
