How to Troubleshoot a Hayward Chlorinator

    • 1). Switch off the pool connected to the Hayward Chlorinator. Remove the chlorinator's lid by hand, but stay as far back from the chlorinator as possible when removing the lid to avoid contact with any chlorine gas built up in the tube.

    • 2). Grab all the chlorine tablets currently inside the chlorinator body with tongs or using gloves and remove them. Grasp the round black or gray debris screen at the bottom of the tube and remove it from the tube.

    • 3). Spray the screen thoroughly with water from a water hose to clear away any gunk or debris on the screen. Check the plastic face of the screen for any damage. Set the cleaned old screen down into the Hayward chlorinator if no damage exists, or use a new screen if the old screen is badly damaged. Damaged or dirty screens seriously reduce the flow of water to the chlorinator.

    • 4). Spray water onto the O-ring located around the interior of the chlorinator lid. Examine the O-ring for worn, flat edges or cracks. Use a new O-ring if significant wear and tear is present on the existing one. A damaged O-ring allows small leaks out of the chlorinator.

    • 5). Lubricate the entire surface of the O-ring with a lubricant intended for this purpose. Do not use petroleum-based lubricants or the O-ring may fail. Insert the O-ring into the Hayward chlorinator lid and set the lid onto the chlorinator loosely.

    • 6). Switch on the pool connected to the Hayward chlorinator and run it until pool water enters the chlorinator tube and begins to spill out from underneath the lid. Tighten the Hayward chlorinator's lid by hand to complete the priming process. Priming purges harmful air pockets form the pool lines that can cause vapor locks.
