How to Install the Throttle Cable on My 1984 Evinrude

    • 1). Attach the throttle cable to the next-to-the-lowest hole in the throttle arm. Check the fast idle lever to ensure it's down in the "Run" position.

    • 2). Tell your assistant to manipulate the propeller as necessary to allow you move the throttle handle between "Neutral" to "Forward." Pull the throttle half-way back to "Neutral."

    • 3). Push the engine throttle lever -- the quarter-disk in the throttle linkage -- so the stop-screw is up against the stop. Hook the cable casing to the lower of the two holes at the bottom of the throttle lever by sliding the lever's pin in place. Insert a cotter pin in the hole through the throttle lever pin. Turn the cotter pin so that it's parallel to the raised rib on the throttle handle.

    • 4). Move to the throttle handle. Grasp the throttle cable and pull the backlash out of it. Place the trunnion nut -- the nut with cylindrical projections from each side -- into the the anchor pocket on the throttle handle. Thread the retainer screw into place to hold the cable in position.

    • 5). Move the throttle handle to "wide open throttle" and back to "Neutral" while your assistant watches the movement of the throttle lever to ensure the idle speed isn't too high and the shift effort isn't excessive. Adjust the trunnion nut to remove more backlash, if necessary, and tighten the cable retainer screw.
