How to Repair Power Door Locks on a 1998 Ford Windstar

    • 1). Engage the parking brake and disconnect the negative battery cable. You will be handling electrical connectors; disconnecting the negative battery cable will prevent shock.

    • 2). Remove the upper trim from the door panel around the interior handle and power mirror switch. The trim panel is attached by clips; use the trim panel tool to pry it off. Disconnect the connection modules and set the panel aside.

    • 3). Pry off the window switch and door lock panel. The panel is attached by one clip located towards the front of the vehicle. Disconnect the modules from the panel and set the panel aside. Locate the retainer screw made visible with the panel gone and remove the screw.

    • 4). Remove the three mounting screws on the bottom portion of the door panel, and then carefully pop off the door panel. The panel is retained by several clips on each side. Be careful not to break the clips or the panel may not reattach correctly. Peel back the plastic backing from the interior part of the door.

    • 5). Disconnect the power door lock rod from the actuator. Remove the mounting screws and the actuator. Place and mount the new actuator in its place. Reconnect the door lock rod and replace the door panel. Carefully pop each clip into the door.

    • 6). Reattach the three lower door panel screws and the retainer screws behind the window switch panel. Reattach the connections for the window switch panel and the power mirror. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
