Plenum Removal for a 1988 Corvette

    • 1). Park the vehicle on a hard, level hard surface and set the parking brake. Set the wheel chocks under the rear wheel. Open the hood and let the engine cool. Remove the negative battery cable. Remove the throttle, throttle valve (transmission kickdown) and cruise control cables. Use needle-nose pliers to remove the clips, and slide the cable latch on the TV cable. Remove the cable retainer at the plenum. Remove the three Torx bolts on the cable-retaining bracket, and move the bracket and cables out of the way.

    • 2). Remove air cleaner and air cleaner assembly. With a screwdriver, remove the clamp from the air flex tube. Remove the air flex tube. Remove the throttle position sensor and idle air control connectors, being careful not to damage the connector or sensor. Using a socket wrench, remove the four bolts holding the throttle body to the plenum. Leave the coolant hose on the throttle body in place. The throttle body can be move around enough to remove the plenum.

    • 3). Remove the two vacuum lines at the right rear of the air plenum. Using a T-40 Torx socket, remove the four bolts retaining the right runner to the plenum and the six bolts attaching the right runner to the intake manifold. Remove the right runner. Remove the four bolts attaching the plenum to the left runner and remove the plenum. Remove the six bolts for the left runner at the intake manifold and remove the left runner. Note which length bolts came from which holes.

    • 4). Reverse the process to reinstall. Replace the plenum, runner and throttle body gaskets if damaged or hard and cracking.
