How to Replace the Fuel Pump on a 2000 Nissan Maxima

    Depressurize the Fuel System

    • 1). Make sure the car is cold before beginning work on the fuel system. There will probably be at least a small amount of spilled fuel, which can ignite if it makes contact with hot parts, such as the exhaust pipe.

    • 2). Remove the gas cap to relieve pressure in the gas tank.

    • 3). Open the fuse box and remove the 15-amp fuel pump fuse. This is the third fuse from the right, on the lower row of fuses. The fuse box is located to the left of the steering wheel, under the dash, and it's covered by a plastic panel that snaps into place.

    • 4). Start the engine and let it run until it uses all the fuel remaining in the fuel lines. Once the engine dies, try to restart it to make sure all fuel is out.

    • 5). Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent sparks.

    Remove the Fuel Pump

    • 1). Remove the rear seat bottom. There is a release cable on each side, underneath the seat. Pull both of these cables at the same time and lift the seat up, out of the bracket. Remove it from the vehicle.

    • 2). Remove the inspection hole cover by taking out the four screws that hold it in place. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel pump unit. There is a plastic tab on each side that you must lift up to separate the two ends.

    • 3). Detach the two fuel lines from the pump unit. The lines have quick connectors. Squeeze the sides of the quick connector to separate the two ends. Before you disconnect the fuel lines, make sure you mark them so you can reconnect them to the fuel filter properly.

    • 4). Remove the six screws that hold the fuel pump unit in place, using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the fuel pump unit up and out of the fuel tank. Be careful not to damage the fuel level sensor as you pull it out.

    • 5). Remove the flange on the bottom part of the unit. Use a flat-head screwdriver to release the four tabs on the unit. Release the two bottom tabs first, and then the upper tabs, and pull the piece off.

    • 6). Separate the fuel level sensor unit from the fuel pump assembly. The fuel level sensor unit is the part attached to the side of the assembly. Disconnect the fuel pump connector using a wrench to turn the nut. Pull the pump down and out of the fuel filter.

    • 7). Slide the fuel pump out of the bottom bracket. There is a cutout on one side that allows it to come out.

    Reassemble the Fuel Pump

    • 1). Attach the new fuel pump to the bracket. Make sure that the rubber support that cushions the pump in the bracket is still in place.

    • 2). Reconnect th fuel pump connector and slide the pump up into the fuel filter. Reattach the fuel level sensor unit by reinserting the connector.

    • 3). Replace the flange by snapping it back into place in the tabs.

    • 4). Place the unit back into the fuel tank. Reattach the six screws. Reconnect the two fuel lines by snapping the two ends together. Make sure the tabs engage to hold the ends together. Confirm that you connect the two fuel lines correctly to the fuel filter.

    • 5). Reattach the electrical connector and reinsert the inspection hole cover.

    • 6). Reposition the rear seat bottom and the seat back. Pull both cables and position the seat into the bracket. Make sure both sides are seated in the channel. Lift up on the seat to check.

    • 7). Reinsert the fuel pump fuse and reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition to "On," without starting the car, and then "Off." Repeat this several times to prime the fuel lines, then start the car. Reattach the gas cap.
