- 1). Park your car in your driveway or a safe place off the street, open the hood and detach the negative (-) battery cable using a wrench.
- 2). Disconnect the fluid-return line from the power-steering pump. This hose is attached to the pump fitting with a clamp you can loosen with a Phillips screwdriver.
- 3). Place a plastic container under the line fitting and detach the return line from its fitting and let the fluid drain into the container. Cover the end of the line with a piece of clean plastic and secure it with a rubber band to prevent system contamination. Store the fluid in a safe place for later recycling.
- 4). Disconnect the pressure line from the steering pump using a flare wrench and cover the end of the line with a piece of clean plastic. Secure it with a rubber band.
- 5). Turn the center bolt on the belt-tensioner idler pulley clockwise to release the belt tension and slip the belt off the steering-pump pulley using a wrench with a large handle. Slowly release the tensioner idler pulley.
- 6). Unfasten the bracket-support brace from the power-steering pump using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.
- 7). Mount the pulley-removal tool T69L-10300-B on the pump pulley and turn the pulley counterclockwise to remove the pulley. Make sure to note the exact position of the pulley on the pump shaft so that you reinstall the pulley in the same position.
- 8). Remove the steering-pump mounting bolts using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket and remove the pump from the vehicle.
- 1). Position the new pump on the mounting bracket and thread the mounting bolts hand-tight. Then tighten the bolts using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.
- 2). Install the pump pulley on the new pump using the pulley-removal tool T69L-10300-B.
- 3). Attach the bracket-support brace to the power-steering pump using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.
- 4). Turn the center bolt on the belt-tensioner idler pulley clockwise and slip the belt on the steering-pump pulley. Then slowly release the tensioner idler pulley.
- 5). Connect the pressure and return lines to the new steering pump. Tighten the pressure-line retaining nut with the flare wrench and secure the return line with the Phillips screwdriver.
- 6). Attach the negative (-) battery cable using the wrench.
- 7). Detach the wire from the ignition coil.
- 8). Ask a helper to crank the engine for 20 seconds as you pour new steering fluid into the steering-pump reservoir. Allow the starter motor to cool for one minute and repeat this step until the oil level is stable at the Full mark.
- 9). Ask the helper to crank the engine and rotate the steering wheel approximately 30 degrees left and right. Then check the steering-fluid level and add as necessary. Repeat this step until the fluid level is stable at the Full mark, allowing the starter motor to cool for one minute between fluid checks.
- 10
Connect the wire to the ignition coil, start the engine and let it idle for three minutes. Turn the steering wheel left and right all the way to the stops and back to center. - 11
Turn off the engine and check the pump fluid level. Add more if necessary.
