How to Install a 120-Volt Electrical Box for a Dryer

    • 1). Place an electrical box up on the wall where you wish to place the outlet. Trace around it with a pencil. Cut out the box outline on the wall with a keyhole saw or jigsaw.

    • 2). Run a wire from the main circuit breaker to the location for the dryer box. Pull the end of the wire through the new hole in the wall. Once the line is set up and connected, cut the power for the line at the main circuit breaker. Place a piece of electrical tape across the switch in the box so that it isn't turned on accidentally.

    • 3). Knock out one of the openings in the back of the box with a screwdriver. Run the wire through the back of the box.

    • 4). Insert the box into the wall. Secure by turning the screws on the corners of the box with a screwdriver until the box is secure in the wall.

    • 5). Strip off the ends of the wires with a wire stripper so that the last inch is exposed.

    • 6). Connect the black wire to the terminal on the socket marked "Live" or "Hot". Bend the wire into place with needle-nose pliers. Once the wire is secure around the terminal, tighten in place with a screwdriver. Secure the white wire to the terminal marked "Neutral". Connect the bare copper wire to the green screw on the terminal or the green wire at the back of the wall box (in metal boxes).

    • 7). Press the sockets and wire gently into the electrical box. Secure the socket in the box with the screws at the top and bottom.

    • 8). Insert the socket cover in place. Tighten the screw.

    • 9). Restore the electricity to the outlet at the main circuit breaker.
