- 1). Verify that the ground surface isn't too slippery if the John Deere won't go up hills. Often, wet grass or muddy surfaces can stop the wheels gripping, even if the wheels turn -- and then gravity keeps the mower from climbing. Wait for the hillside to dry out and try the job again. Slow down if the engine loses power going up hills. Never drive too fast for the conditions.
- 2). Release the parking brake if you continue to have problems. Push and hold the brake pedal down. The pedal is on the left. Pull the parking brake lever, also on the left, and then release the brake pedal. Try to climb the hill again.
- 3). Check the engine, in particular the air cleaner. A dirty cleaner can cause the engine to lose power. This can cause poor performance that will stop the engine working under strain, which includes climbing hills. Park the John Deere and let the engine cool. Lift the hood and clean dirt and debris from the air cleaner cover. Lift the latch and unlock the cover. Wash the foam precleaner in a warm water and soap solution. Rinse and dry the precleaner before reinstalling it. Replace the paper air filter element with a new one. Don't try to wash it. Replace the cover and try the hill again.
