- 1). Buy horseradish roots or plants from your local nursery or garden center. If you have friends who grow horseradish, ask if you can get cuttings from their roots for your own garden.
- 2). Prepare your planting area. Choose a spot in your garden that gets at least partial sun. Horseradish will grow in almost any condition, but to thrive, it needs at least a little sunlight each day. Areas in deep shade will not do.
- 3). Work your garden bed with a tiller or garden fork to a depth of 12 inches. Remove any rocks you find while tilling. Pour a 6-inch layer of compost, manure, or peat moss, and blend it into the soil with your garden fork or tiller.
- 4). Dig a trench that is about 6 inches deep and 4 inches wide. Set the horseradish cuttings in the trench, leaving about 12 inches of space between each one, and backfill the trench. Water the area thoroughly so the soil is moist.
- 5). Lay down a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch. This will help retain heat and moisture, as well as prevent weeds from growing and overtaking your horseradish plants. You should not have to water your horseradish very often unless you experience particularly dry weather. If the weather is unusually dry, water once or twice a week. Harvest roots any time after midsummer.
