- 1). Call or visit your local city planning office to learn of any product requirements, i.e. wind ratings. Since neither panels nor plywood affix permanently, a permit for installation is not usually required.
- 2). Choose the protection option that meets your needs, budget, and local requirements, if any.
- 3). Measure your garage door. If you chose plywood, add at least eight inches overlap to the measurements to provide adequate space for securing them to the wall.
- 4). Purchase your chosen protection product at your local building supply or hardware store. If you've chosen plywood, you'll also need to purchase bolts, wood or masonry anchors, and large washers to attach the boards to the house. If you've chosen panels, the attachment hardware may come included.
- 5). Install the panels following the manufacturer's directions. If you chose plywood, mount each plywood panel over the outside of the garage door using the drill, bolts, wood or masonry anchors, and large washers. The panel should overlap the door edge by at least four inches on each side. Secure each panel every 12 inches.
