- 1). Turn off the iron and make sure that it is completely cool before you try to clean it.
- 2). Wet a rag with vinegar and lightly wipe the surface of the iron to remove the burnt fabric. If the vinegar alone does not remove the fabric, combine vinegar with baking soda to make a paste. Apply a small amount of the paste to a rag and gently scrub the surface of the iron.
- 3). Rinse the surface of the iron with a clean cloth moistened in water and check if any of the burnt fabric is still present on the iron.
- 4). Turn the iron onto the highest setting if you see a waxy substance. If you accidentally ironed over a button, you may have more than just fabric to try to remove. Once the iron is hot, run the iron over a newspaper several times. The residue should quickly disappear.
- 5). Turn the iron off and wait for it to cool. Rinse the iron again with clean water and a moistened rag.
- 6). Repeat the cleaning steps if any stubborn burnt fabric remains.
