- 1). Fulfill the professional experience requirements of the application. There are three options you can complete for this part of the prerequisite and each requires that you have experience in the industry outside the classroom. The first commands that you were recently or are currently employed in meeting planning within the last year and for three years total. The second shortens that requirement by a year if you have a bachelor's degree in the field. Alternately, if you are currently an instructor in the industry on a full-time basis and for at least three years, you qualify.
- 2). Satisfy the application's internship or continuing education obligations. The second part of the application is fulfilled in two ways. One is to complete a professional internship that is at least 200 hours long in the areas of hospitality/tourism, exhibition, event or meeting management. Secondly, completion of at least 25 hours of continuing education in the five topics listed in the CMP Blueprint also satisfies this application requirement.
- 3). Pass the written exam. After fulfilling the application requirements, those candidates eligible to take the examination are notified by the CIC through email. The certification test is held only once during the summer and winter. It can take up to two months to receive notice that you passed or failed. If you fail the first attempt, you will receive notice of where you were strong and weak on the exam so you know what to work on. You must pay another examination fee to take the test again.
- 4). Take notice of the time limitations. If your application is rejected at first, you can appeal but must do so within 14 calendar days. Additionally, once you receive notice that you are able to sit for the official examination, you have two years to take it before your invitation expires.
