- 1). Once a week, remove all washable bedding from your bed including sheets, pillowcases, mattress covers and blankets and load into your washing machine. Depending on the bulk of the materials, you may need to divide into 2 or 3 loads of wash.
- 2). Set your washing machine onto the hot water setting. To effectively kill dust mites, water should reach 130 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Add laundry detergent and wash as normal.
- 3). Thoroughly dry bedding in the dryer. Place back onto the bed or fold for storage in an airtight container (to prevent re-infestation with dust mites).
- 4). Any non-washable materials or fabrics that are not able to be washed in hot water can be placed into the freezer for 25 to 48 hours to kill the dust mites. Afterward, place the items in the laundry and wash as normal or (for non-washable items) vacuum over the surface to remove dead dust mites.
