- 1). Reduce consumption of butter, citrus fruits, garlic and cheese, as they are high in acid and raise your body's acidity levels.
- 2). Increase daily exercise. Cardiovascular exercise aids in reducing weight, and excess weight contributes to stomach acid being pushed back into your esophagus.
- 3). Avoid fried and fatty foods. These foods are high in saturated fat and are difficult for your body to break down, which results in heartburn and excessive acid production.
- 4). Consume alkaline foods. Spinach, broccoli, cucumbers, almonds and yogurt lower your body's pH level by reducing the amount of acid. Raisins, bananas and coconuts are also alkalinic foods that maintain your pH level.
- 5). Limit alcoholic beverages. Alcohol increases your body's acid production, and worsens the symptoms of GERD.
