How to Protect a Wooden Kitchen

    • 1). Purchase an EPA-approved biocide with water repellent from a home goods store. Look for an AWPA standardized product that will protect wood that may come into contact with food.

    • 2). Follow the safety precautions on the label of the container.

    • 3). Clean all the wood surfaces in your kitchen with a clean damp cloth. Allow the surfaces to dry completely. Place plastic sheets on the kitchen floor.

    • 4). Remove any pets or children from the kitchen area. Wear a protective face mask and spray the entire surface of the wood in your kitchen with the biocide to treat it.

    • 5). Open any windows to ventilate the area and leave for at least one day to avoid chemical inhalation. Wipe the wooden surfaces clean with a damp cloth when you return to the area and wash the cloth in hot water.
