- 1). Turn the engine off. Set the trimmer on the ground to let the muffler cool for a few minutes. Hoist the shaft into the air. Settle it into the crook of your arm to brace it.
- 2). Wipe off grass, weeds and other debris from the string head and shaft with the rag. Grab the bolt that connects the string head to the shaft with the wrench.
- 3). Hold the bolt steady while untwisting the wing nut on the other end of the bolt. Pull the wing nut off and the bolt out of the hole. Pull the string head off the trimmer shaft.
- 4). Inspect the parts for damage. Clean and repair any broken parts.
If you wish to re-install the string head at this time, do so by lining up the eyelets on the shaft and the string head. Then thread the bolt through the holes on the shaft and string head. Hold the bolt in place with the wrench while tightening the wing nut with your fingers.
