Troubleshooting a Dryer Breaker

    • 1). Turn the dryer off if the unit suddenly has stopped in the middle of a cycle. Locate the breaker box and the circuit breaker that controls the dryer. Flip the breaker switch to the “On” position. Power is now flowing to the unit.

    • 2). If the dryer continues to trip the breaker, move the dryer breaker switch to the “Off” position to stop the flow of electricity to the dryer before inspection.

    • 3). Locate the power supply wire connection points from the dryer to the circuit breaker at the dryer electrical panel and the circuit breaker. Confirm the wires are connected properly at each point. Wires connected to the wrong terminals might cause problems with the electrical flow.

    • 4). Inspect the electrical wires that connect the dryer to the circuit breaker for damage, such as tears or frays. If the wiring is damaged or bare in any area of insulation, it’s possible two hot wires might be touching, which causes the circuit breaker to trip. Confirm the circuit breaker is turned off before touching exposed wires and contact an electrician to repair the wires.

    • 5). Inspect the circuit breaker and the dryer wiring to confirm both are able to support the electrical load imposed on the wires and breaker by the dryer. Refer to the dryer owner’s manual to confirm the electrical specifications of the dryer. Contact an electrician to replace wires and the circuit breaker for ones of the correct amperage.
