The Best Lighting Over a Pool Table

    In General

    • The bottom of a hanging billiards lamp should be at about eye level. It should be no closer to the billiard table's top than 40 inches. The lamp should be centered on the table from all sides to fully illuminate each edge.

    Table Length

    • Different table lengths require different sizes of hanging lamp. According to Jacobi Billiard Manufacturing, a table that's 7 feet long should have a light that's at least 40 inches long, an 8-foot table's light should be at least 50 inches long and a 9-foot table should have a lamp that's 60 inches long or more.

    Luminescence

    • The World Pool-Billiard Association requires lighting for its tournaments to be at least 48 foot-candles at every point along the table's surface. The association recommends a screen or reflector under all lamps to evenly distribute illumination.

    Other Lighting

    • The WPBA also advises that other lighting in the room be kept to a minimum, which will place the focus on the table and keep players eyes from being blinded. It recommends no more than 465 foot-candles of light in the room.
