Air source heat pumps are one of the latest heating systems that can not only save you money on your fuel bills, but also reduce your carbon footprint.
What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
Simply put, an air source heat pump is a heating device that absorbs heat from outdoors to be re-used in the home. The system is very simple but it's effective too. The weather outside does not need to be warm for the system to work either, as air source heat pumps can generate heat from temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees.
There are two types of air pump available to choose from: air to water heat pumps and air to air heat pumps, both are energy efficient heating options and economical to run.
Air to Water Heat Pumps
Air to water heat pumps absorb the energy or heat from the air outside and uses that energy to heat water within the home. Air to water heat pumps consist of an external energy collector, an internal heating and hot water distribution unit and a heating delivery system and hot water store. This type of air source heat pump is particularly suitable for fuelling under floor heating or oversized radiators.
Air to Air Heat Pumps
Air to air heat pumps work in a similar way to air to water heat pumps by collecting outside latent energy and converting it into heat. The heat is then circulated around the home. The internal heat distributer is unobtrusive too so air to air heat pumps are perfect for smaller houses, conservatories or flats that have access to an external wall that can accommodate the outdoors energy collector. Air to air heat pumps are multifunctional too and can also be used as an air cooler or air purifier.
Air source heat pumps require a fairly large external space for installing the outdoor energy collector pump unit. A good heating engineer will assess your home's suitability for an air source heat pump system.
Renewable Energy Technology
25% of the UK's carbon emissions are produced by domestic heating systems, 75% of this total is produced by heating our homes and generating domestic hot water. Air source heat pumps are designed to provide heating and hot water without the carbon emissions and are fuelled by free, constant, latent energy from outdoors making them a truly renewable and sustainable heating option.
Air source heat pumps are easy to install, quiet to run and cost effective, making a noticeable difference to energy bills. It gets better too; if they are installed correctly air source heat pumps are also relatively maintenance free.
