Ok, this might be a tough one.
Ok, it is also maybe a little disgusting, but nevertheless, it is a problem that a lot of dogs face, and one we will discuss here.
So, you say your dog is eating his/her poop, and you don't know why? Well, let me tell you two things.
First off, this is not an uncommon problem.
But it is one that, for obvious reasons, needs to be dealt with.
Second, there are several reasons why your dog may have taken up this rather distasteful habit.
The name for this behavior is Coprophagy (eating feces).
Sometimes, Coprophagy is the result of one or several different emotional states that your dog may be going through.
These can include but are not limited to; stress, anxiety, and frustration.
You might say that Coprophagy is a compulsive, or displacement behavior in response to one of the above.
Another possibility is that this may be an attention-seeking behavior, similar to barking or digging.
It is also possible that Coprophagy in your dog may be caused by a deficiency of some kind.
Some common deficiencies that may cause this behavior are thiamine or vitamin B deficiencies.
It is advised that if your dog has a poop-eating problem, the first step should be to take him/her to a veterinarian for a complete physical evaluation before determining the best course of action.
You can understand how pointless it is to punish a dog for this behavior when it is actually being caused by a vitamin deficiency, or another health problem.
A veterinarian could not only provide helpful insight with a physical examination, but could tell you how to get on the right track to eliminating this problem.
