- 1). Obtain an associate degree at a local college. There isn't one particular degree that is better than others for this line of work. An associate degree that includes classes in anatomy, clinical classifications and coding systems and medical terminology will greatly benefit your chances of obtaining a medical biller or coder job, according to the BLS. Such courses allow you to understand a patient's medical records and assign the health insurance code appropriately.
- 2). Take a training course in medical coding or medical billing. There are several options for getting training specific to this profession, from online courses to attending a trade school. When choosing a training program, choose one that is backed by the American Health Information Management Association or the American Academy of Professional Coders. These are two well-established professional health technician organizations. Both also offer their own training courses and provide a list of approved courses on their website.
- 3). Get one or more certifications from the professional health technician organizations. Both the American Health Information Management Association and the American Academy of Professional Coders offer several types of certifications, such as Certified Coding Associate, Medical Coding Certifications, Medical Auditing Certifications and Medical Compliance Certifications. Requirements, which are listed on the organizations websites, vary for each certification but usually include the training you've already completed and taking an exam.
