How to Welcome a Princess

    • 1). Greet the princess as 'Your Royal Highness' in a formal setting.

    • 2). If you are British and are greeting a British princess, curtsy or bow. British women make a small curtsy and British men bow their heads from the neck only. It is not required that citizens of countries other than the United Kingdom curtsy or bow when greeting a member of the British royal family. Performing this courtesy indicates respect for the British head of state and for other members of the royal family. For citizens of other countries, this not required because the queen is not their head of state. For Americans, if men wish to make a slight bow or if women wish to do a little bob, it is optional and is considered a nice sign of respect, according to Paul Gauger, the director of UK regional press for VisitBritain, who had offered his advice to 'Good Morning America'.

    • 3). Do not offer your hand, but allow the princess to extend her hand to you. Do not hold your hand limply and do not grip or pump her hand. Do not hug or kiss the princess. Except for the handshake, people are not allowed to touch members of the royal family.

    • 4). Address her as 'Ma'am' when speaking to her, after you've officially greeted her, or in an informal setting.
