Gardening Basics - Just Get Started!

In this article we will examine a few basic principles of plant growth and your garden planning.
The best way to start is to just do a little research and then when the weather is right, get outside and start planting! Plants need certain conditions in order to grow healthy and strong.
They need a certain amount of sunlight, water, and nutrients.
Also, it can't be too hot or cold.
Try to match plants to your conditions.
Weather Whatever you plant, can it adapt to the climate in which you are growing.
Winter temperature and summer's high temperatures? Is there enough rain in your area to keep the plant growing, or will it need moisture attention? Know your climate and what plants can thrive in your particular are.
Sunlight and/or Shady Areas Obviously plants need light to grow right.
But, the right amount of light is the key.
Some plants need sunlight all day long.
Those that don't get enough seem to grow all stems as if trying to reach for for the sun.
On the contrary, plants that don't get enough seem produce flowers poorly.
Put shade-lovers in the shade and avoid the sun-magnets because they just won't survive.
Don't worry though, there are hundreds and hundreds of shade-lovers to choose from.
The Dirt and Water What kind of dirt is in your selected growing area? Whether it is clay or sand you can find plants that will not only grow but will thrive in whatever soil you have.
Soil moisture is also a factor to consider.
If your climate is snow, palm trees, or desert, there are plants that can adapt to just about any situation.
It is a lot easier to find plants to adapt to your conditions, rather than trying to change your conditions.
Commom Plants in Your Area The plants that are common to your area have existed probably for over a thousand years becoming adapted to the exact conditions in which they grow.
These plants also help the local wildlife and nature around the area that depend on them for food and shelter.
Your local nursery can help you select native plants.
