- 1). Take necessary information with you when setting up new service. You may need a credit card, drivers license or government identification, and utility bill. You should also know your Social Security Number. The new phone company may do a credit check, so be prepared to pay a deposit if you have bad credit or no credit history.
- 2). Buy a new phone to go with your new service. This might not be necessary, because many companies give new customers free phones. At the very least, most companies give new customers discounts on phones.
- 3). Call your old cell phone carrier to end service with them. Tell your old carrier your reasons for canceling. If you are ending your service before your contract is over, be prepared to pay an early termination fee. According to PC Magazine, this fee can be anywhere between $175 - $350 dollars depending on your contract. If your contract is over, you will not have to pay a fee.
