- 1). Dig in compost in a one-to-one ratio with the soil where you want to plant the garlic, using a shovel. Do this in late fall, but before the first frost of the season. Wait for a couple of frosts to pass, but do not wait so long that the ground is too hard to work.
- 2). Plant individual seed garlic cloves, pointed end up, in holes 2 inches deep and at least 4 inches apart.
- 3). Cover with soil, then cover with a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch. Wait until spring for garlic shoots to emerge.
- 4). Apply a good all-purpose vegetable fertilizer according to package instructions after shoots are 2 inches high. Follow the fertilizer manufacturer's application instructions.
