How to Trim a Southern Live Oak

    • 1). Cut away all dead, crossed or damaged branches, especially from the lower branches of the tree. Use lopping shears so that all cuts are sharp and clean, and so that no bark or stubs are left behind.

    • 2). Remove all lower limbs once they reach 1 inch in diameter. This will help train the tree trunk and prevent scarring.

    • 3). Prune several intersecting branches in the middle to upper tree. Ensure that the branch you want to remove forms no greater than a 45-degree angle to the lateral branch it intersects.

    • 4). Slant all cuts upward so that water does not collect in the cut and the branch can heal properly.
