How to Keep Snakes Out of Chicken Houses

    • 1). Move all wood piles, rock piles, boards, mulch piles and other objects that are surrounding the chicken house. These items all make perfect hiding places for snakes and will actually attract them. In addition, if you have a compost pile, move it far away from the house as snakes like to lay their eggs in compost.

    • 2). Mow the lawn with a lawn mower and trim weeds surrounding the chicken house on a regular basis. Snakes do not like open areas and prefer to hide in tall grass. Keeping the grass mowed will deter them from coming near the chicken house.

    • 3). Place a single layer of cinder blocks around the entire outside perimeter of the chicken house to block the snakes access. Lay the cinder blocks on their sides and place the sides of the cinder blocks as close together as possible to create a solid cement wall. Pack the soil down tightly next to the blocks using a hand held soil tamper. Snakes cannot dig into tightly packed soil.

    • 4). Examine the foundation of the chicken house for small holes and cracks. Seal all of these with caulk or foam insulating spray to block access from the snake.
