- 1). Ask yourself what you think you should be doing. Then ask yourself if that is something you really want to do, or if you are trying to live out someone else's idea of what you should be doing. Sometimes a lack of ambition is a sign that you are resisting doing something that is not right for you.
- 2). Think about what you would do if you could do anything and didn't have to worry about money. Write your purpose in life in one sentence. Try career counseling or self-help books if you are not sure what you want to do. Lack of ambition may stem from not having found goals that are right for you.
- 3). Ask yourself if you are so afraid of failing that you would rather not even try to achieve your goals. Fear of failure can be an ambition killer. Becoming aware of your fear is the first step in dealing with it.
- 4). Break your goals down into smaller, more manageable chunks if you are feeling overwhelmed. Take one step at a time, and give yourself rewards for your progress. If you've given up and lost ambition because your goals seemed impossible, you may just need to organize your work differently.
- 5). Give yourself permission to be ambitious. Ambition may have a bad reputation sometimes, but if you act ethically and set worthy goals, there is nothing wrong with working hard to achieve them and nothing wrong with wanting to get credit for what you have done.
- 6). Ask yourself if you want to live a hard-driving competitive life or if you prefer to be laid back -- or something in-between. The more you get in touch with what you really want, the happier you are likely to be.
