- 1). Consider your style of play, whether you're a strict butterfly type of goalie or use a mix of stand-up and butterfly moves. You play style will affect the type of pad you choose. Although not the rule, butterfly goalies generally choose a pad with stiff thigh rise and hybrids choose pads with a flexible knee for greater agility. Most companies offer these pad models.
- 2). Measure from the your instep to the middle of your knee, then from the middle knee to where you want the pad top to rise on your thigh. Add these number to your skate size to determine proper size. Add another two to four inches to the pad size for additional blocking surface if desired.
- 3). Sketch some ideas for graphics on your pads that reflect your personality or team, or choose stock graphics supplied by the manufacturer. Choose your colors. Determine what material you would like the pad made from. Common choices are weave, nylon, Pro-Glo or leather.
- 4). Submit your pad ideas online or consult an authorized dealer of the brand of your choice to receive a price quote. Many companies require a deposit before beginning custom work.
