- 1). Use a kit to grow mushrooms. Kits will come with a sterilized log, known as the substrate, and mushroom spawn.
- 2). Drill several holes in the log and fill with the mushroom spawn plugs. You may need to use a hammer to get the plugs all the way in. Depending on the mushroom species in your kit, you may need to cover the plugs with wax or plastic wrap to seal-in moisture. Check the instructions for details.
- 3). Store the log in a warm, humid room and water it daily. If you live in the drier parts of Colorado, you may need to invest in a humidity tent to help your mushrooms grow. In as little as two to three weeks, you should have edible mushrooms ready for harvesting.
- 1). Bring a large pot of water to a boil and fill with dry straw. Boil the straw down until it becomes quite soft but still maintains its shape.
- 2). Remove the straw from the water and place it on a sheet of plastic wrap. Allow the straw to cool down enough so you can touch it comfortably.
- 3). Sprinkle the mushroom spawn over the straw, then bunch it all together to form a tight log. Wrap the log in the plastic wrap and make a few slits across the top of the log.
- 4). Store the log in a warm, humid and dark place, or under your humidity tent, until a white substance starts forming inside the plastic wrap. When you see this, move the log to a cooler location and water it often to keep the straw moist. You should find edible mushrooms in as little as two weeks.
