- 1). Examine the tree branches on each tree to which you want to attach Christmas lights. Remove any broken or cracked branches to prevent these from falling out of the tree after you have decorated it.
- 2). Purchase at least two, 200-bulb strands per 10-foot tree, choosing bulbs that are safe for outdoor use.
- 3). Plug one of the strands of lights into a heavy-duty extension cord that is suitable for outdoor use. Plug the extension cord into your home so you will know if you accidentally unplug or break a bulb as you hang the lights. Replace any blown bulbs if necessary.
- 4). Start at the base of the tree trunk 12 inches from the ground. Wrap the lights around the trunk, spacing the winding cord approximately 4 inches apart.
- 5). Position a ladder against the tree. Ask someone to hold the base of the ladder for extra stability as you climb up to attach the lights.
- 6). Use clear zip-ties to attach the lights to each branch; don’t pull the zip-ties too tight or you can damage the lights and tree branches. Continue attaching the lights to each branch with zip-ties.
- 7). Continue circling the tree with the lights and attaching the lights to the branches with clear zip-ties until you reach the topmost branches that you can reach or want to light.
